Q.- How do I protect my FAA medical
certificate from being revoked?
High blood sugar is the Number 1 reason why pilots fail their annual
medical certification tests. The
risks pilots face from high blood sugar are no laughing matter. The Federal
Aviation Agency's 'Guide for Medical Examiners' states that: "a medical
history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus requiring insulin or
other hypoglycemic drugs are disqualifying." Diagnosed pre-diabetic
conditions require FAA decision. And pilots using medication must go
through special issuance procedures to hope to re-obtain a certificate.
But if you can control or
prevent diabetes through exercise and diet - and that includes dietary
supplements - you can avoid that nightmare, keep your certificate and
stay airborne!
Knowing how important it
is for pilots to have their glucose controlled without Insulin or the
use of prescription medications which would jeopardize their required health
certification, our group of internists and surgeons at the
Garcia Institute and the Paxon Medical
Center enlisted a group of pilots in Jacksonville Florida to use a special
blend of herbs and phyto-nutrients to prevent or eliminate diabetic
symptoms. We are fortunate to have a
wide array of commercial, recreational and military pilots near our practice
in the greater Jacksonville Florida region.
DIABETAN™
Diabetes can
affect anyone who is overweight, has a poor diet, or simply through changes
in our ability to process sugar as we age. Diabetes
usually runs in the family, so it’s best to know early on if you have it.
For those who don’t yet have diabetes: you should do everything you
can to prevent onset of symptoms.
When left unattended, diabetes could escalate to hyperglycemia, which
develops from too much glucose (sugar) in the blood, and leave the person
temporarily unconscious, or, worse, cause severe infections, poor healing
abilities, heart ailments gout, numbness from nerve damage and more.
Chances are you will
confront the challenge of diabetes sooner or later. In fact, an estimated
18,200,000 Americans have some form of diabetes and another 15,000,000 not
yet been diagnosed. More than 60 percent of Americans over 65 have either
diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition.
And many of us in the boomer age group have diabetes and don’t even
know it.
So what can
we do about the threat to our health from diabetes?
For starters
we can help delay the effects of diabetes through diet, exercise, and having
regular check ups with a doctor to monitor blood pressure and cholesterol.
Taking care yourself before the onset of diabetes will make living with the
disease much easier later on in life.
